Overview
Catha edulis extract, commonly known as khat extract, is a botanical extract derived from the leaves of the *Catha edulis* (khat) plant, an evergreen shrub native to the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. The extract contains various active phytochemicals, including the psychostimulant alkaloids cathinone and cathine, as well as tannins, flavonoids, and polyphenolic compounds. It is traditionally chewed for its mild amphetamine-like stimulant effects. In preclinical research, Catha edulis extract has been investigated for its potential antimicrobial properties, demonstrating antibacterial activity against pathogens such as *Neisseria gonorrhoeae*, *Escherichia coli*, and *Staphylococcus aureus* [7016]. It has also been studied for its effects on the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, and potential cytotoxic activity in certain cancer cell lines.
