Overview

Cathelicidin-BF (also known as BF-30) is a cationic, amphiphilic, alpha-helical antimicrobial peptide (AMP) originally isolated from the venom of the banded krait snake (Bungarus fasciatus). Developed by Suzhou Kanger Biomedical and China Pharmaceutical University, it is being evaluated as a vaginal effervescent tablet for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis. Cathelicidin-BF exerts its antimicrobial effects primarily by binding to negatively charged bacterial cell membranes, causing membrane permeabilization, depolarization, and pore formation, which leads to cell lysis. It also targets intracellular components, such as bacterial genomic DNA and ATP synthase, to inhibit transcription and energy production. In addition to its direct bactericidal activity, cathelicidin-BF exhibits immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, such as inhibiting the NF-kB pathway. It is currently in Phase I clinical development in China.
