Cathepsin B siRNA is a small interfering RNA (siRNA) designed to specifically target and silence the expression of the cathepsin B (CTSB) gene. Cathepsin B is a lysosomal cysteine protease involved in various physiological and pathological processes, including protein degradation, apoptosis, and inflammation. By utilizing the RNA interference (RNAi) pathway, the siRNA facilitates the degradation of CTSB mRNA, leading to a significant reduction in cathepsin B protein levels. In preclinical research, such as studies on cerebral aneuryses, silencing cathepsin B has been shown to mitigate the apoptosis of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) by inhibiting the activation of Caspase-3 and modulating signaling pathways like JNK. This approach is being explored for its potential therapeutic benefits in diseases characterized by excessive cathepsin B activity, including certain cancers and vascular disorders.
