Overview

Cathinone is a naturally occurring monoamine alkaloid found in the leaves of the *Catha edulis* (khat) shrub. It is structurally related to amphetamines and is considered the primary psychoactive component responsible for the stimulant effects of khat. Cathinone acts as a norepinephrine–dopamine releasing agent (NDRA), stimulating the release of dopamine and inhibiting reuptake of epinephrine, norepinephrine, and serotonin in the central nervous system. This leads to increased alertness, euphoria, talkativeness, and other stimulant effects similar to those produced by amphetamines[3][7][8]. The drug can also cause adverse cardiovascular and neurological effects at higher doses or with chronic use[5]. Internationally, cathinone is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance due to its potential for abuse[3].
