The cationic exchange resin being developed by Vera Salus Ricerca is an orally administered therapeutic candidate currently in the IND-enabling phase for the treatment of hyperkalemia. As a cationic exchange resin, the drug functions within the gastrointestinal tract by binding excess potassium ions in exchange for other cations, such as sodium or calcium. This sequestration prevents the absorption of potassium into the bloodstream and promotes its elimination through the feces, thereby reducing serum potassium levels. This mechanism is particularly relevant for patients with chronic kidney disease or heart failure who are at high risk for life-threatening potassium elevation, often exacerbated by the use of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitors.
