Overview

Cattle epithelium is an allergenic extract derived from the epithelial tissue of cows (Bos taurus) and is used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in individuals with allergies to cattle. For diagnosis, it is used in skin prick tests and for in-vitro IgE antibody testing to confirm sensitization to cattle allergens. As a therapeutic, it is administered as a form of allergen-specific immunotherapy (hyposensitization) to desensitize patients, particularly those with occupational exposure like farmers and veterinarians who suffer from symptoms such as allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. The extract contains various allergenic proteins, with the major allergen identified as Bos d 2, a 20-kDa lipocalin protein found in cow dander, saliva, and urine. The product is regulated by the FDA and is available as an injection solution in various concentrations.
