Overview

Cavia porcellus dander is a non-standardized allergenic extract derived from the dander of the domesticated guinea pig (*Cavia porcellus*). It is primarily utilized as a diagnostic tool in allergy testing to identify Type I hypersensitivity (allergic sensitization) in patients, particularly those with occupational exposure such as laboratory animal workers, veterinarians, or pet owners. The extract contains a complex mixture of proteins that act as allergens; when administered via skin prick (topical) or intradermal (subcutaneous) injection, these proteins cross-link allergen-specific IgE antibodies bound to the surface of mast cells and basophils. This interaction triggers the release of inflammatory mediators like histamine, resulting in a visible wheal-and-flare reaction at the test site. While its primary use is diagnostic, such extracts are also used in allergen immunotherapy (hyposensitization) to reduce clinical symptoms upon subsequent exposure.
