Overview
Cavilon (specifically Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film) is a liquid barrier film developed by 3M that forms a transparent, breathable, and waterproof protective coating on the skin. It is composed of a unique blend of polymers, primarily an acrylate terpolymer, dissolved in a fast-drying, non-stinging solvent system consisting of hexamethyldisiloxane and isooctane. The film is designed to protect intact or damaged skin from body fluids, adhesive trauma, friction, and incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD). In the context of oncology, it is used prophylactically to reduce the incidence and severity of radiodermatitis in patients undergoing radiotherapy for cancers such as breast cancer. Unlike traditional ointments or creams, it does not require removal and does not interfere with the adhesion of medical tapes or dressings.
