Overview
Cayratia japonica gel is a topical Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) preparation developed by the Nanjing Hospital of Chinese Medicine (Affiliated to Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine). It is primarily indicated for the treatment of postoperative wounds following anal fistula surgery to promote healing and reduce complications such as pain, edema, and exudation. The gel is formulated from the extract of *Cayratia japonica* (also known as Bushkiller or Wulianmei), which contains bioactive constituents including flavonoids, terpenoids, and phenolic acids. Its mechanism of action involves potent anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha and IL-1 beta, as well as promoting the expression of growth factors like VEGF to accelerate granulation tissue formation and re-epithelialization. Additionally, it exhibits antimicrobial properties that help prevent local infections at the surgical site.
