CB6604 (also known as ER Noscapine) is an extended-release formulation of noscapine (CB3304), a benzylisoquinoline alkaloid originally derived from the opium poppy. Developed as an antineoplastic agent, CB6604 acts as a microtubule-interfering agent by binding to tubulin. Unlike traditional microtubule-targeting agents that extensively stabilize or destabilize microtubules, noscapine and its derivatives subtly modulate microtubule dynamics, arresting cell division at the metaphase stage and inducing apoptosis in cancer cells. CB6604 was designed to increase the exposure time of cancer cells to noscapine, thereby enhancing its apoptotic and antitumor efficacy. Originally licensed by Cougar Biotechnology from Emory University, the program was acquired by Johnson & Johnson in 2009 and remains in preclinical development for the treatment of various cancers.
