Overview

CbpD_pep4 is a synthetic peptide representing an immunodominant B-cell epitope derived from the **Choline-binding protein D (CbpD)** of *Streptococcus pneumoniae*. It is being investigated as a potential antigen for the development of a polysaccharide-independent, protein-based pneumococcal vaccine. CbpD is a murein hydrolase and a key virulence factor involved in pneumococcal fratricide, a process that facilitates DNA release and genetic transformation during colonization. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that immunization with CbpD_pep4, particularly when used in combination with other pneumococcal protein epitopes (such as PhtD, PhtE, and ZmpB), elicits high titers of opsonophagocytic antibodies (OPKA) and confers protective immunity against lethal challenge with virulent pneumococcal serotypes, including serotype 3, in murine models.
