Overview

CBTNps is a calcium-based thermosensitizer nanoparticle, specifically composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) nanoparticles surface-modified with polyethylene glycol (PEG). It is designed to encapsulate the vascular disrupting agent DMXAA. CBTNps enhances radiofrequency ablation (RFA) therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma by responding to the acidic tumor microenvironment, leading to the release of carbon dioxide (CO2) bubbles that create a continuous cavitation effect. Additionally, the deposition of Ca2+ from the nanoparticles instigates calcium death in tumor cells, strengthens thermal conductivity, and fortifies the immunogenic cell death (ICD) induced by RFA. This synergistic approach aims to amplify the effect of thermal ablation treatment.
