Overview

**CCR5-overexpressing endothelial progenitor cells** are a genetically engineered cell therapy product in which endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) have been modified to overexpress the chemokine receptor CCR5. EPCs are bone marrow–derived progenitor cells with the ability to differentiate into mature endothelial cells, contribute to neovascularization, and facilitate tissue repair. Overexpression of CCR5 enhances the recruitment, migration, and homing of these cells to sites of vascular injury, ischemia, or tissue damage, leading to improved endothelial repair and angiogenesis. The mechanism of action centers on the increased sensitivity and chemotactic response of EPCs toward CCL5 (RANTES), which binds CCR5, promoting more efficient migration and incorporation of the modified EPCs into damaged areas. This cell therapy is primarily investigated for potential applications in regenerative medicine, including the treatment of conditions like myocardial ischemia, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, and wound healing.
