Overview

CD133 RNA aptamer is a targeted oligonucleotide therapeutic designed to bind specifically to CD133 (also known as Prominin-1), a cell surface glycoprotein that serves as a marker for cancer stem cells (CSCs). These CD133-positive cells are often associated with drug resistance and tumor recurrence. The aptamer is being investigated, notably by researchers at Georgetown University, as a means to sensitize resistant cancer cells to other treatments. In preclinical studies, it has been evaluated in combination with the MEK inhibitor trametinib and the anti-helminthic agent mebendazole for the treatment of NRAS-mutant melanoma. It has also been explored as a delivery vehicle for cytotoxic payloads like doxorubicin in liver cancer models.
