CD19-directed chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells are an autologous cell therapy developed by Wroclaw Medical University for the treatment of aggressive B-cell malignancies. The therapy involves the genetic modification of a patient's own T cells to express a chimeric receptor that specifically recognizes the CD19 protein, a biomarker found on the surface of most B-cell lymphomas. Upon binding to CD19-positive cells, the CAR-T cells undergo activation and expansion, leading to the targeted destruction of malignant B cells. This academic CAR-T program, often referred to as the WRO-CAR project, aims to treat patients with relapsed or refractory non-Hodgkin lymphoma, including diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and high-grade B-cell lymphomas with MYC, BCL2, or BCL6 rearrangements.
