Overview

CD19-targeted CAR T cells are genetically modified T cells that express a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) designed to recognize CD19, a protein expressed on B cells. The CAR consists of an extracellular single-chain variable fragment (scFv) that binds to CD19, linked to intracellular T-cell signaling domains (CD3ζ plus costimulatory domains like CD28 or 4-1BB). When infused into patients, these engineered T cells recognize and destroy CD19-positive cells, including both malignant B cells and normal B cells. This therapy has shown remarkable efficacy in treating relapsed/refractory B-cell malignancies, with complete remission rates as high as 90% in some studies.
