CD19 universal CAR-T cells represent an allogeneic cell therapy approach where T cells from healthy donors are engineered with a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) to specifically target the CD19 protein found on B cells. This 'off-the-shelf' strategy aims to overcome the limitations of autologous CAR-T therapies, such as lengthy manufacturing times, dependence on patient T cell quality, and high costs. The therapy is being investigated for its safety and efficacy in treating CD19-positive refractory/relapsed B-cell malignancies, including B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia and B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma, as well as autoimmune diseases like refractory systemic lupus erythematosus, by eliminating pathogenic B cells.
