Overview

CD33 CAR NK cells are an investigational cell therapy designed to treat relapsed/refractory acute myeloid leukemia (r/r AML). This therapy utilizes natural killer (NK) cells engineered with a Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) specifically targeting the CD33 antigen, which is widely expressed on AML cells. The CAR enables the NK cells to recognize and bind to AML cells, leading to their destruction. Developed by Ruihao Huang and colleagues at the Medical Center of Hematology, Xinqiao Hospital of Army Medical University, in Chongqing, China, this therapy aims to overcome challenges associated with 'on target, off tumor' side effects seen with other myeloid malignancy targets by leveraging the safety profile of NK cells. Early clinical findings presented at the 2022 EHA Annual Meeting showed efficacy and safety in a small cohort of r/r AML patients, with some achieving MRD-negative complete response.
