Drug intelligence / Profile preview
CD34+ hematopoietic progenitor cells are a population of multipotent stem and progenitor cells characterized by the expression of the surface antigen CD34. These cells are capable of self-renewal and differentiation into all blood cell lineages, including erythrocytes, leukocytes, platelets, and lymphocytes. The presence of the CD34 marker is widely used to identify and isolate these stem/progenitor cells for clinical applications such as bone marrow or stem cell transplantation[1][8][9]. In addition to their role in reconstituting the hematopoietic system after chemotherapy or radiation therapy (e.g., in leukemia or lymphoma), they have demonstrated pro-angiogenic properties that support new blood vessel formation (angiogenesis) and tissue repair[4][6]. Mechanistically, these effects are mediated both by direct incorporation into vasculature as endothelial progenitors and through paracrine signaling that promotes angiogenesis, anti-inflammatory responses, immunomodulation, anti-apoptosis/fibrosis activity[4][6]. Clinically validated uses include treatment for various malignant (e.g., leukemia) and non-malignant diseases (e.g., sickle cell disease), critical limb ischemia (CLI), refractory angina, dilated cardiomyopathy, claudication due to peripheral artery disease—often under investigation in regenerative medicine trials[4][6][10].
