The CD4-specific T-cell vaccine is an autologous cell-based immunotherapy developed by Soroka University Medical Center for the treatment of HIV infection. This therapeutic approach is based on the hypothesis that the hallmark depletion of CD4+ T cells in HIV/AIDS is driven, in part, by an autoimmune process where the patient's own immune cells attack CD4+ T cells. The vaccine is produced by isolating a patient's own CD4-reactive T cells, which are then expanded and inactivated using glutaraldehyde. When re-administered to the patient, these fixed cells act as a vaccine to induce a regulatory immune response against the pathogenic autoimmune T-cell population. The primary clinical goals are to arrest CD4+ T cell attrition, increase overall CD4+ counts, and potentially modulate the viral load and specific immunity against HIV.
