CD79B-CAR-T is an investigational chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy designed to target CD79B (also known as B29), a transmembrane protein that serves as a signaling component of the B-cell receptor (BCR) complex. CD79B is highly specific to the B-cell lineage and is expressed on the surface of mature B-cells and various B-cell malignancies, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). The therapy involves genetically engineering a patient's T-cells to express a CAR that recognizes the extracellular domain of CD79B, thereby redirecting the immune system to selectively eliminate CD79B-positive malignant cells. In preclinical research, such as studies conducted at Washington University School of Medicine, CD79B-CAR-T has been utilized as a negative control to evaluate the specificity and efficacy of other CAR-T constructs targeting antigens like CS1 or BCMA in multiple myeloma models, as CD79B is typically absent on plasma cells.
