CD83-positive mesenchymal stem cells are a specialized subpopulation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) characterized by the expression of the CD83 surface marker. These cells are being investigated as a cell-based therapy, primarily for their immunomodulatory and regenerative properties. MSCs generally exert their therapeutic effects through direct cell-to-cell contact with various immune cells and the secretion of soluble factors, including cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors, which collectively suppress inflammation and promote tissue repair. The presence of CD83 on these MSCs is believed to enhance their immune-regulatory functions, potentially by influencing the maturation and function of other immune cells like dendritic cells. They are currently being explored for their potential in treating severe inflammatory conditions such as sepsis.
