Overview

CEA mimotope refers to a peptide-based vaccine candidate designed to mimic an epitope of the Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA; CEACAM5). Developed by researchers at the Medical University of Vienna, this therapeutic approach aims to induce an active immune response against CEA, a protein frequently overexpressed in various cancers. Research presented at AACR 2010 highlighted that CEA acts as a pro-angiogenic factor by directly binding to endothelial cells and triggering signaling cascades including c-src, focal adhesion kinase (FAK), and ERK phosphorylation. By immunizing with a CEA mimotope, the resulting immune response can disrupt these CEA-mediated interactions, leading to a breakdown in tumor vascularization and inhibited tumor growth. This strategy has shown efficacy in preclinical models of renal cell cancer and sarcoma, suggesting that targeting CEA-mediated signaling may offer a novel therapeutic avenue for cancer treatment.
