Overview

Cecolin is a bivalent vaccine developed by Xiamen University and Xiamen Innovax Biotech to prevent infections caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV) types 16 and 18, which are the primary drivers of cervical cancer. It is notable for being the first HPV vaccine produced using an *Escherichia coli* expression system, a platform that offers high-yield and cost-effective manufacturing compared to traditional yeast or insect cell-based systems. The vaccine is composed of purified L1 capsid proteins that self-assemble into virus-like particles (VLPs). These VLPs mimic the structure of the virus to induce a robust neutralizing antibody response without containing viral DNA. Cecolin is primarily indicated for the prevention of cervical cancer and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) in females, and it received WHO prequalification in 2021.
