Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cedium is a brand of topical antiseptic and disinfectant products developed by the Belgian healthcare company Qualiphar, primarily used for wound care and skin disinfection. The product line includes several formulations, most notably Cedium Chlorhexidine (containing chlorhexidine digluconate) and Cedium Benzalkonium (containing benzalkonium chloride). These agents function as broad-spectrum antimicrobials by disrupting microbial cell membranes. Chlorhexidine, a cationic biguanide, binds to the negatively charged surfaces of bacteria, leading to increased permeability and the leakage of intracellular components. Benzalkonium chloride, a quaternary ammonium compound, similarly acts as a surface-active agent that destabilizes the lipid bilayer of microorganisms. Cedium products are available as aqueous or alcoholic solutions and sprays for the treatment of minor wounds, abrasions, and for preoperative skin preparation.
