Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cefaclor is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, particularly those of the respiratory tract, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and tonsillitis. Sam-A Pharmaceutical developed a sustained-release formulation of cefaclor using its proprietary IDIA™ (Intelligent Drug Interaction & Absorption) controlled-release microparticle technology. This formulation allows for a twice-daily dosing regimen, improving patient compliance compared to the standard thrice-daily dosing of immediate-release cefaclor. The drug exerts its antibacterial effect by binding to and inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) involved in bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death.
