Cefalotin (also known as cephalothin or sefalothin) is a semisynthetic first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death. Cefalotin is structurally related to other first-generation cephalosporins such as cefazolin and is administered parenterally (intravenous or intramuscular routes). Its primary indications include the prevention of infections during surgery and the treatment of a broad spectrum of infections including those affecting blood, bone or joints, respiratory tract, skin, and urinary tract[6][8][10]. The drug contains a beta-lactam moiety that makes it susceptible to degradation by beta-lactamases produced by some bacteria[10].
