Overview

Cefalotin sodium (also known as cephalothin sodium) is a first-generation, semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic with broad-spectrum bactericidal activity. Originally developed and introduced by Eli Lilly in the 1960s under the brand name Keflin, it was the first commercially marketed cephalosporin. Cefalotin sodium works by binding to and inactivating penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall, which disrupts peptidoglycan synthesis and leads to bacterial cell lysis and death. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of serious infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, bones and joints, as well as for surgical prophylaxis. It is administered parenterally via intravenous or intramuscular injection.
