Cefathiamidine is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is a beta-lactam antimicrobial agent that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death. Cefathiamidine is primarily used in China and some other countries for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and sepsis. Its mechanism of action involves binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby blocking the transpeptidation step in peptidoglycan synthesis essential for bacterial cell wall integrity.
