Cefatrizine is a broad-spectrum, semisynthetic, first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It acts by binding to and inactivating penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. PBPs are enzymes involved in the terminal stages of assembling the bacterial cell wall and reshaping it during growth and division. Inactivation of these proteins interferes with cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains, weakening the bacterial cell wall and leading to cell lysis. Cefatrizine is used primarily for treating a variety of bacterial infections including those affecting the respiratory tract, ear, skin, and urinary tract[2][3][7]. It is less effective against some gram-positive bacteria compared to other first-generation cephalosporins[7].
