Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a combination of multiple beta-lactam antibiotics (cefazolin, cefuroxime, cefotaxime, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, cefepime—all cephalosporins; penicillin G and ampicillin—penicillins), Pre-Pen (benzylpenicilloyl polylysine used for allergy testing), and histamine. Such a mixture is not used therapeutically but may be employed in specialized diagnostic protocols for evaluating beta-lactam antibiotic allergies or hypersensitivity reactions. The antibiotics act by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial lysis. Pre-Pen is used as a major determinant in skin testing for IgE-mediated penicillin allergy. Histamine may be included as a positive control in skin testing procedures[5][7]. This combination does not represent an approved pharmaceutical product but rather components commonly involved in allergy evaluation.
