Cefcapene is an oral third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic of the cephem class. It acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, exerting its antibacterial effect primarily through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for peptidoglycan cross-linking in the bacterial cell wall. This leads to cell lysis and death of susceptible bacteria. Cefcapene is used to treat a wide range of infections, including skin, respiratory tract, urinary tract, gynecologic, ophthalmic, otolaryngologic (ear/nose/throat), dental, and oral surgical infections[1][2]. It is marketed as the pivaloyloxymethyl ester prodrug (cefcapene pivoxil hydrochloride) to enhance oral bioavailability.
