cefcapene pivoxil

Cefcapene pivoxil is an oral, third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic developed by Shionogi. It is a prodrug of cefcapene, where the pivaloyloxymethyl (pivoxil) ester group enhances oral bioavailability. As a beta-lactam antibiotic, it exerts its antibacterial effect by binding to and inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for bacterial cell wall synthesis. It possesses a broad spectrum of activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including *Staphylococcus aureus*. It was first approved in Japan in 1997 and is used for various bacterial infections, including respiratory and urinary tract infections. The granule formulation is specifically designed for pediatric use.
