Cefiderocol is a novel siderophore cephalosporin antibiotic with a unique mechanism of action that allows it to penetrate the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, including multi-drug resistant strains. It is used to treat complicated urinary tract infections and hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia, including ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia, caused by susceptible Gram-negative bacteria. Developed by Shionogi & Co., Ltd., it was approved by the FDA in November 2019 and by the EU in April 2020.
