Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cefexy-OZ is an oral fixed-dose combination of the third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic cefixime and the nitroimidazole antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent ornidazole. Developed by Neiss Labs, it is marketed in India for the treatment of mixed bacterial and protozoal infections, including respiratory, gastrointestinal, gynecological, urinary tract, skin and soft tissue, and dental infections. Cefixime exerts its bactericidal effect by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and causing cell lysis. Ornidazole undergoes reductive activation within anaerobic microorganisms, generating reactive intermediates and free radicals that interact with microbial DNA, causing strand breakage and inhibiting nucleic acid synthesis. Together, the two agents provide synergistic, broad-spectrum antimicrobial coverage.
