Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cefwell-OZ is a fixed-dose combination antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication manufactured by Helax Healthcare. It contains cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin, and ornidazole, a nitroimidazole derivative. Cefixime exerts its bactericidal effect by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby inhibiting the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell walls. Ornidazole is a prodrug that is activated within anaerobic microorganisms; its reduced metabolites interact with DNA to cause loss of helical structure and strand breakage, leading to cell death. This combination is typically indicated for the treatment of mixed aerobic and anaerobic infections, including intra-abdominal infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, and infectious diarrhea or dysentery.
