Overview

Cefmenoxime is a third-generation, broad-spectrum, semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic. It is active against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including many beta-lactamase-producing strains. Its primary mechanism of action is bactericidal: it inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for peptidoglycan crosslinking in the bacterial cell wall. This leads to loss of cell wall integrity and ultimately bacterial lysis and death. Cefmenoxime is highly resistant to hydrolysis by most beta-lactamases and demonstrates high clinical efficacy in infections such as respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, gynecologic/obstetric infections, skin/soft tissue infections, intra-abdominal infections (e.g., peritonitis), bloodstream infections (sepsis), otitis media/externa, sinusitis, and gonorrhea[1][3][6][7]. It can penetrate inflamed meninges for use in some central nervous system infections.
