cefmetazole

Cefmetazole is a semisynthetic cephamycin antibiotic, usually grouped with the second-generation cephalosporins. It exhibits a broad spectrum of activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including anaerobes such as Bacteroides fragilis. Cefmetazole is particularly effective against beta-lactamase-producing organisms that are resistant to first-generation cephalosporins or penicillins. Its mechanism of action involves inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death. The drug is administered parenterally (intravenous or intramuscular) and is used for treating respiratory tract, skin and soft tissue, urinary tract, gynecologic infections, as well as for perioperative prophylaxis in certain surgical procedures[1][2][4].
