Overview

Cefonicid is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic administered intravenously or intramuscularly. It acts as a bactericidal agent by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for the final stage of peptidoglycan cross-linking in the bacterial cell wall. This disruption leads to cell lysis and death. Cefonicid is primarily used for urinary tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, soft tissue and bone infections, joint infection, pneumonia, sepsis, skin and structure infection, surgical prophylaxis, and cesarean section. It is highly protein-bound (98%) and not metabolized in the body[1][2][5][8].
