Cefotetan is a semisynthetic, broad-spectrum cephamycin antibiotic of the second-generation cephalosporin class. It is administered intravenously or intramuscularly and is highly resistant to a broad spectrum of beta-lactamases, making it effective against many aerobic and anaerobic gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Its primary mechanism of action involves inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for peptidoglycan cross-linking in the bacterial cell wall, ultimately leading to cell lysis and death. Cefotetan is used for the prophylaxis and treatment of various bacterial infections, including those affecting the urinary tract, bones and joints, lower respiratory tract, skin, blood, stomach area (intra-abdominal), and female reproductive organs[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. It is commonly used perioperatively to prevent surgical site infections.
