Cefovecin is a third-generation, broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic used primarily in veterinary medicine for the treatment of skin and soft tissue infections in cats and dogs. It is administered as a long-acting subcutaneous injection, providing antimicrobial effects for up to 14 days after administration. Cefovecin works by binding to penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting cell wall synthesis and resulting in bacterial cell death. It is effective against pathogens such as Staphylococcus intermedius and Streptococcus canis (Group G) in dogs, and Pasteurella multocida in cats.
