Overview

Cefpirome is a fourth-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is particularly effective in treating severe hospital-acquired infections such as pneumonia, sepsis (bloodstream infections), urinary tract infections (UTIs), skin and soft tissue infections, and abdominal infections. Its mechanism of action involves binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in bacterial cell walls and inhibiting the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis. This disruption leads to bacterial cell wall lysis and death. Cefpirome is stable against most beta-lactamases except for some extended-spectrum SHV enzymes. It is administered intravenously or intramuscularly for systemic treatment of moderate to severe bacterial infections[1][2][3][4][5][7][9].
