Cefpodoxime is an orally administered third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including those of the respiratory tract (such as bronchitis and pneumonia), urinary tract, skin, ear, sinuses, throat, tonsils, and gonorrhea. It is available as tablets and oral suspension. Cefpodoxime is a prodrug (cefpodoxime proxetil) that is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and converted to its active form. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding preferentially to penicillin-binding protein 3 (PBP3), thereby blocking peptidoglycan production essential for bacterial cell walls. This results in bactericidal activity against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria but not against *Pseudomonas aeruginosa* or *Enterococcus* species. Cefpodoxime is stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes produced by some resistant bacteria[1][2][3][4][5][6][8]. Developed by Sankyo and manufactured by Astellas Pharma.
