cefpodoxime + clavulanic acid

cefpodoxime + clavulanic acid is an oral fixed-dose combination antibiotic consisting of cefpodoxime proxetil, a third-generation cephalosporin, and clavulanic acid (usually as potassium clavulanate), a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Cefpodoxime is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed to its active form, cefpodoxime, which exerts bactericidal activity by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Clavulanic acid acts as a suicide inhibitor of various beta-lactamase enzymes, which are produced by resistant bacteria to hydrolyze and inactivate beta-lactam antibiotics. By inhibiting these enzymes, clavulanic acid protects cefpodoxime from degradation, thereby extending its spectrum of activity to include beta-lactamase-producing strains of *Haemophilus influenzae*, *Moraxella catarrhalis*, and *Staphylococcus aureus*. This combination is widely used for treating respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and skin and soft tissue infections.
