cefpodoxime + levocetirizine + oxymetazoline

cefpodoxime + levocetirizine + oxymetazoline is a combination therapeutic regimen evaluated by Lumbini Medical College for the treatment of otitis media with effusion (OME) in children. This regimen consists of three distinct pharmacological agents: cefpodoxime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic; levocetirizine, a second-generation antihistamine; and oxymetazoline, a topical nasal decongestant. Cefpodoxime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through the binding of penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), addressing potential bacterial infections that may contribute to OME. Levocetirizine acts as a selective H1-receptor antagonist to reduce allergic inflammation and mucosal secretions. Oxymetazoline is a direct-acting sympathomimetic that stimulates alpha-adrenergic receptors to constrict nasal blood vessels, thereby reducing mucosal edema and improving Eustachian tube function. The combination was studied in a Phase 4 clinical trial to compare its efficacy and cost-effectiveness against steroid-based treatments.
