Drug intelligence / Profile preview
IPOD-CV is an oral fixed-dose combination antibiotic containing cefpodoxime proxetil, a third-generation cephalosporin, and clavulanate potassium, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Developed by Thrift Pharmaceuticals, it is approved and marketed for the treatment of various mild-to-moderate bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections (such as bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, tonsillitis, and pharyngitis), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and otitis media. Cefpodoxime proxetil acts as a prodrug that is de-esterified in vivo to active cefpodoxime, which inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Clavulanate potassium acts as a suicide inhibitor of beta-lactamases, preventing the enzymatic degradation of cefpodoxime and extending its spectrum of activity against beta-lactamase-producing, resistant bacterial strains.
