cefradine

Cefradine is a first-generation, semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic belonging to the beta-lactam class. It is used in the treatment of a variety of bacterial infections including those of the respiratory tract (such as tonsillitis, pharyngitis, and pneumonia), urinary tract (including prostatitis), skin and soft tissues, ear (otitis media), and sinusitis. Cefradine acts by binding to penicillin-binding proteins inside bacterial cell walls, inhibiting the final stage of peptidoglycan synthesis required for cell wall integrity. This disruption leads to cell lysis and death via activation of autolytic enzymes within bacteria[1][2][3][7][8]. Its spectrum of activity is similar to that of cefalexin. Cefradine is not approved by the FDA for use in the United States but has been marketed under various brand names elsewhere.
