Overview
Ceftaroline fosamil is a fifth-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) and community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP) in adults and children. It is a prodrug that is rapidly converted in vivo to its active form, ceftaroline. The drug exerts its bactericidal effect by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), including PBP2a—a key resistance determinant in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)—as well as other PBPs involved in cell wall synthesis. This unique binding profile gives it activity against multidrug-resistant Gram-positive bacteria such as MRSA and penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae, along with some Gram-negative pathogens. Ceftaroline fosamil was developed for intravenous administration due to its chemical properties[1][2][6][8].
