Overview
Ceftazidime + avibactam + aztreonam is a combination antibiotic therapy being evaluated by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for the treatment of infections caused by metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL)-producing Gram-negative bacteria. The combination leverages the unique properties of its components: aztreonam, a monobactam, is stable against hydrolysis by MBLs but susceptible to other beta-lactamases often co-produced by these pathogens. Avibactam, a non-beta-lactam beta-lactamase inhibitor, protects aztreonam from these co-produced enzymes (such as ESBLs and KPCs). Ceftazidime, a third-generation cephalosporin, is provided as part of the fixed-dose combination with avibactam (Avycaz). Together, this regimen aims to restore antibacterial activity against highly resistant Enterobacterales.
