Ceftiofur is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic developed for veterinary medicine. It is a semisynthetic, beta-lactamase-stable, broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to and inactivating penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for bacterial cell wall formation, ultimately leading to bacterial cell lysis. Ceftiofur is widely used to treat various bacterial infections in livestock and companion animals, including respiratory diseases, foot rot, metritis, and mastitis.
